Summary: There are exemptions for disabled veterans on a sliding scale. The relief is determined by your disability rating, so be sure to keep it up to date.

Disabled veterans are eligible for special relief on property taxes. The amount of relief is based on your disability rating. You do have to file an application to get this relief by April 1 to get relief for the previous year’s taxes. Disability ratings often increase. Don’t forget to file a new application if your rating changes.

100% disabled veterans – qualify for exemption of the total appraised value of the home. No property taxes have to be paid.

Sliding scale for other disabled veterans:

  • 10-29% – $5,000 exemption
  • 30-49% – $7,500 exemption
  • 50-69% – $10,000 exemption
  • 70-99% – $12,000 exemption

Special tax treatment is also permitted for a disabled veteran’s surviving spouse. The Texas Comptroller publishes an FAQ on this. Contact your property tax office for more information.
