Unfortunately, there are many scam credit repair companies on the internet. A credit repair company is not going to be able to do anything that the person cannot do on his own. However, if you want someone else to dispute false, derogatory information, you can use a credit repair company. Just be sure you know they are a reputable company. The Consumer Finance Protection Bureau offers tips on recognizing a credit repair scam.
Beware of a company that claims to be able to assist you in removing timely, accurate data from your report.
If properly disputing the error does not result in correction of a legitimate error, you may be able to bring a lawsuit under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Consult an attorney who handles FCRA cases for more information should you not be able to resolve false reporting on your own.
